To share the spirit of jazz with aspiring musicians, this masterclass has invited Sherrie Maricle, a leading figure in the American jazz scene, as the instructor. Sherrie Maricle’s exceptional drumming skills and versatile musical style will offer Taiwanese students a unique learning experience, deepening their understanding of jazz while enhancing their performance skills to become well-rounded musicians.
This masterclass is held in collaboration with the Department of Music at National Taichung University of Education, bringing high-quality cultural resources to Taichung. It provides young students with the opportunity to receive guidance on stage and engage closely with an international musician, helping to broaden their horizons and immerse them in the captivating world of jazz music.
Sherrie Maricle is an important advocate for women’s roles in jazz in the United States. She began her musical education at a young age and received her Master’s degree in Jazz Performance from New York University in 1986. She has collaborated with all-female jazz big bands in the United States, promoting equal performance opportunities for female musicians and raising public awareness about gender issues.
Currently, Sherrie leads The DIVA Jazz Orchestra, her quintet FIVE PLAY and co-leads the 3D Jazz Trio. In 2009, she received the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2017, her group was invited to perform at the NEA Jazz Master’s Awards Ceremony. Sherrie Maricle is an exceptional jazz musician, recognized for her outstanding contributions to the jazz world.
